IGN talked to Kevin Williamson about The Following, a new show on Fox, and
also brought up what happened at the end of Vampire Diaries season 3. He did say, "Once we came up
with the Original family, we knew that the next stage would be Elena turning
into a vampire." This was planned to come up on the television series for a
while, and it does sound like they're not going to forget the fact that Elena
never said she was hoping to one day be turned into a vampire, as Williamson
went on to say, "To me the most moving moment in the whole thing is when Elena
says, 'I don't want to be a vampire.' That worked, and I think that's going to
drive the entire fourth season for a long time, and watching her on that
journey."
So how will Elena handle this change
since it's one she never wanted? If she knew that she had vampire blood in her
when she drowned, that could ease the transition a bit, but it's still going to
be a tough one for everyone. This isn't something that can just be solved
overnight, and it sounds like The Vampire
Diaries season 4could be dealing with those over a decent amount of time
once she does complete the transition. After all, they're also heading towards
graduation this season, and that in itself is stressful. Adding in the fact that
very few of them are still human, and it's the making of pretty good
drama.
Even if Elena was somewhat prepared—but
really, even knowing it was coming couldn't really help—for this transition if
she knew she had the blood in her, what's key is that she never wanted that. She
wanted to live a mortal life, and now she has no choice, especially if they
don't have Bonnie suddenly find a spell to reverse it at some point. Even if
they do decide to go down that path, that could still take all season, giving
them plenty of time to explore Elena's life as a vampire.
